The RSF has been accused of committing a genocide in Darfur – towards the area’s non-Arabic teams

Sudan is taking the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Worldwide Courtroom of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of supporting Sudan’s paramilitary Fast Help Forces (RSF) within the civil warfare.

Khartoum argues the UAE is “complicit within the genocide” of the Masalit group, in West Darfur, by way of its navy, monetary and political backing for the RSF.

In response, the UAE has strongly rejected Sudan’s allegations, calling the case a “cynical publicity stunt”, and saying it’ll search a direct dismissal.

For the reason that warfare started in April 2023, each the RSF and the Sudanese military have been accused of committing atrocities.

The RSF has been accused of committing a genocide in Darfur – towards the area’s non-Arabic teams.

In keeping with information company AFP, Sudan’s submission to the ICJ says: “The United Arab Emirates fuels the insurrection and helps the militia that has dedicated the crime of genocide in West Darfur.

“The United Arab Emirates should make full reparation for the damage prompted (by) its internationally wrongful acts, together with paying reimbursement to the victims of the warfare.”

An unnamed UAE official mentioned that “the allegations offered by the SAF consultant on the ICJ lack any authorized or factual foundation, representing yet one more try and distract from this calamitous warfare”.

UN consultants monitoring the arms embargo on Darfur have beforehand described accusations of the UAE smuggling weapons to the RSF by way of Chad as credible.

The ICJ’s advisory opinion shouldn’t be legally binding however nonetheless carries important political weight.

The practically two-year warfare has devastated Sudan, with tens of hundreds killed and over 12 million individuals displaced, fuelling one of many world’s worst humanitarian crises.
